Meta Introduces ‘Threads’, A New App To Compete With Twitter

In a clash of tech billionaires, Mark Zuckerberg dealt a blow to Elon Musk as Instagram’s Threads platform, a rival to Twitter, was launched by Meta. The app’s ties to Instagram are expected to attract a large user base and advertising opportunities, potentially diverting ad revenue from Twitter, which is struggling under its new CEO. Threads function as a standalone app but allow users to log in with their Instagram credentials and follow the same accounts, making it an easy addition for Instagram’s 2 billion monthly active users.

The launch of “Threads” comes amid an ongoing rivalry between Zuckerberg and Musk, with the two trading barbs and even threatening to settle their differences in a real-life mixed martial arts cage match in Las Vegas. Meta’s timing appears strategic as Twitter has faced turbulence due to Musk’s controversial decision-making in recent months.

While Meta is likely to focus on user growth initially, industry analysts predict that big brands will invest heavily in advertising on Threads to capitalize on its relative brand safety and early buzz. Notably, brands such as Billboard, HBO, and Variety quickly set up accounts on the platform, along with celebrities like Shakira and former Meta Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg. Despite this, there were no visible ads on the app at the time.
